Thinking About ‘You’ve Got Mail’

I watched the first half of “You’ve Got Mail” when I was home for Christmas. I love this movie so much. I need to watch the rest sometime soon. Any ways, something Kathleen (Meg Ryan) wrote in an email to Joe (Tom Hanks) jumped out at me and has stuck with me ever since.

Kathleen Kelly: [writing to NY152] Sometimes I wonder about my life. I lead a small life – well, valuable, but small – and sometimes I wonder, do I do it because I like it, or because I haven’t been brave? So much of what I see reminds me of something I read in a book, when shouldn’t it be the other way around?

I don’t really want an answer. I just want to send this cosmic question out into the void. So good night, dear void.

What a powerful email! Holy smokes. We make decisions every single day out of habit, out of responsibility, out of expectations, out of what’s comfortable. How many brave decisions do we make? How many decisions do we make for us, without self-doubting or second-guessing ourselves? How many risks do we take? I, also, am not looking for an answer. I just wanted to throw my thoughts out there. 🙂

See, people think romantic comedies are all light and fluffy. Not always. That smart lady Nora Ephron was onto something.
